Primary School Workshops
I feel that it is critically important to educate children to the danger of hidden sugars in our day to day food and drink, to help them to make healthier choices and to reduce the risk of them developing health issues as they get older.
My ‘sugar’ workshop lasts around 45/50 minutes per class of 20/30 year 3/4/5/6 pupils, and is interesting as well as educational. I believe that children learn best when they are invested in the education process, and to that end my workshops involve a lot of interaction with them to assist them assimilate the information presented and help them to be able to use it in their day to day lives.
At present, I am able to offer this service free of charge to Primary Schools in Kent – all I ask for in return is some feedback in the form of a testimonial from the school, and comments on the workshop from some of the pupils.
If you would like me to present to the pupils of your school, please contact me.

“The children were shocked at how much sugar was in a jar of Nutella and struggled to lift the 20kg of sugar over a year that a weekly bottle of cola gives the body. The children were thoroughly engaged with the game, to find the different amounts of sugar in everyday items.”
Jacqui Davis – Head of SMSC
“Neil presented the session in a fun and accessible way. The children loved the interactive nature of the activities and have a much better knowledge of what their food contains. Perhaps more adults should attend these sessions!”
Chris Neesham – Deputy Head – Pastoral
“I loved the games – it made it so much fun.”

“It was a very unique and interesting session full of facts that the children fully enjoyed. More information would be needed for the older children in the school, but this session was pitched at the right level for Year 3 children and the practical side of it kept the children interested.
Overall a very enjoyable session!
Thank you Neil.”

‘I liked that it taught me how much sugar was in the things I like’

‘It was good to see how many sugar cubes are in drinks’

“Neil’s workshop was extremely powerful and will ensure a generation of children will be informed about their food and drink choices. The use of sugar cubes was a visual reminder of how much sugar is in popular food and drinks. It will hopefully make the children reconsider eating or drinking their favourite sugary treats, or at least cutting back on them.
As a parent as well as a teacher, I have cut back on buying certain food and drink: keeping it for special occasions. As my daughter attended one of the workshops, she understands the reasons for this and can tell me how many sugar cubes are in the food she eats.
Neil’s workshops are excellent in promoting wellbeing and providing awareness of just how damaging to long-term health eating food containing sugar can have to the body.”
Claire Rayner (year 5/6 class teacher)
“I thought it was really good. It showed me the better foods to eat, this will help me control my levels.”
“I learnt not to eat too much junk food. Now I eat a lot less unhealthy foods than I used to.”
