
You Are At Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes
There are many risk factors associated with the onset of Type 2 Diabetes, and whilst there are commonalities, a person's lifestyle or diet will not determine for sure whether they will develop the disease.
For example, an individual could be significantly overweight and have blood sugars considered to be 'normal'. However, there are many cases of those in the 'ideal weight' category who have been living with Type 2 Diabetes for many years.Â
The lesson here is that your body size is not necessarily a determinant as to whether you become pre-diabetic or fully Type 2 Diabetic, but certainly excess weight and obesity does significantly increase the risk.
And whilst we are on the subject of risk, below is a common list of factors that often increase the likelihood of a person developing Type 2 Diabetes:
- Having a sedentary lifestyle, with little or no regular physical activity
- Being over the age of 45 (although more and more cases of Type 2 Diabetes in the under 30's and even the under 20's are becoming increasingly common)
Having factors that negatively affect insulin sensitivity, including:
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol
- non-alcohol fatty liver disease
- metabolic syndrome
- polycystic ovary syndrome
- A family history of Type 2 Diabetes
