In March 2021 I turned 75, and had a routine health check with my GP. Although I had been overweight since my 30s, I was horrified to learn I was now technically obese. Worse, I was pre-diabetic. If I did nothing, my blood glucose levels indicated that I would have Type 2 diabetes before long. A friend’s husband had that condition, did nothing to alter it, and died last December following a leg amputation caused by his disease. Two other close friends are overweight and have become diabetic. I did not want to join them.

My goddaughter knew Neil and recommended him, as he had conquered type-2 diabetes ten years before by a change in lifestyle. The cost, about the price of a decent holiday, has been money very well spent. What price can you put on good health? My blood glucose levels are now right in the middle of the normal range. I’m most unlikely now to get diabetes.

It was the other health benefits that were so unexpected. I am now slimmer that I have been for over 40 years.

  • 91.5kg down to 72.4kg, a reduction of over 20%
  • My waist was a tight 40 inches. I now buy 34-inch waist trousers.
  • My collar size has gone down from a tight 16.5 inches to a loose 15 inches.
  • I take 25% of my previous medication for high blood pressure and may in time be able to stop taking hypertension medication altogether.
  • My cholesterol level and HDL/LDL balance are now normal. I no longer take statins.
  • I used to take asthma drugs for breathlessness after exertion such as walking fast, or climbing a hill. I stopped those months ago and enjoy long walks again.
  • My skin condition has improved. Patches of psoriasis are fading and disappearing.
  • I have much more energy. I feel good. People keep telling me how well I look.
  • I’m sure my immunity has improved. I cannot remember the last time I had a cold.

Neil does not put you on a diet, but recommends a new way of life that incorporates regular moderate exercise (such as walking) and a little high-intensity exercise – but not more than you can comfortably manage.

Most important are good hydration and improved and balanced food intake, including portion control. The eye-opener for me was education. I thought my diet was healthy, but I had so many misconceptions. I am still learning, still collecting recipes, enjoying new tastes to replace the unwise choices I used to make. Carbohydrates and fats are reduced, but we do need some of each. Protein and fibre are increased. Nutrition-rich food is encouraged. Ultra-processed food and added sugars are avoided wherever possible. Calories are controlled, but not uncomfortably. Intermittent fasting (so no snacking between meals) is recommended.

I have dieted before (Atkins, Dukan) and lost a stone or so. Not only did the effects not last, the diet was miserable and difficult. Neil’s recommendations allow for a lot of variety, constant interest, and satisfying meals. Yes, you have to forego some foods you might have enjoyed (in my case that included regular fish and chips, pizzas, tropical fruits, Cadbury’s fruit & nut chocolate and potatoes). I have never been a big bread, biscuit or cake eater so avoiding those was no hardship. And foods I can eat are among my favourites: English fruit, salads, green vegetables, eggs, fish – for example.

Some discipline is required. Keeping a daily food and drink diary. Weighing everything you eat. Taking your blood glucose levels three times a day. But, for me, watching the kilos fall away and average blood glucose levels diminish, and wanting to avoid diabetes, were motivation enough. Further, I did not wish to waste the money and time I was investing in my own future. Despite the fact that the love of my life died 4 years ago, and life did not then feel worth living, I’m now eager to reach 100 – but to retain my good health in the process.

I am not sure I could have achieved all this without Neil’s regular support and guidance. At the end of my course, I feel well-equipped and incentivised to continue with my healthy lifestyle. You are what you eat!

And I know Neil is there if I should need further assistance.

I am in my late 50’s and not uncommonly was carrying too much weight, had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, and was on medication for high blood pressure. I was taking 4 tablets each morning and a statin at night. Each year I had become accustomed to gaining a bit of weight, putting it down to “typical for my age”. I’m not vain, but I was becoming self-conscious realising that in photos I was the overweight one. I wasn’t happy with my situation, but wasn’t sure how to go about changing a situation that clearly needed changing. I didn’t have the energy levels I should have, and knew I needed to take more care of myself.

In 2017 I suffered a serious shoulder injury, and while awaiting surgery keeled over one day, leading to a visit to a cardiologist, and a trip to an operating theatre for an angiogram. Two consultants eventually discharged me from their care, but with their words ringing in my ears that I needed to lose weight, unless I wanted to bring on more health problems. I wasn’t massively overweight, but I was overweight, and clearly that was affecting my health.

I started working with Neil and was drawn to his approach. Neil went to a lot of effort to listen to me and to find out what issues were causing me the greatest concerns. Neil is passionate about eating the right food. What resonated with me was his focus on natural ingredients, and food that, where possible, is unprocessed. By utilising a food diary Neil was able to laser in on foods that specifically affected me. By regularly working with him, and by sticking to his programme, my weight has fallen, and more importantly stopped yo-yo’ing. My blood sugar levels have been brought under control, but most crucially through eating a healthy diet, not because of my medication. I have taken up exercise too. That’s played a significant part in how matters have progressed, but as anyone who knows will tell you, “you can’t out-exercise a bad diet”. Working with Neil has completely changed my perception of normality. He doesn’t support any food programmes, just healthy eating. He’s taught me not to obsess about weight. It’s not the actual weight that’s important, it’s what that weight is that counts more. My visceral fat levels have fallen, my hydration levels have increased, my muscle mass has increased, my metabolic age has reduced – no longer am I the older man in a younger man’s body. I have much more energy than when I started working with Neil, and move far more feely too.

Neil places great emphasis on education, he’s not at all prescriptive, but is very supportive. By learning to live a healthier lifestyle I know what’s good, what’s not so good, and what’s just bad for you, I’ve learned that you can have some of each and still enjoy life, but I know how to manage each.

The impact has been stark. My blood pressure is well under control, my cholesterol levels are low and my blood sugar levels have fallen dramatically. I recently had my annual diabetic review and my doctors have stated that if in six months time my levels are as they are presently they will take me off all medication. If that happens it will be a huge step because it happens all too rarely. Going forward I will continue working with Neil. Were I to revert to old habits the previous health issues would clearly reoccur, which is something I’m very keen to avoid. The simple truth is that having tried dieting in the past, having concentrated on healthy eating, I’ve never been able to structure things properly. Neil’s expertise, support and guidance have enabled me to do what has always eluded me in the past, and I have no doubt that without his help I wouldn’t have made the gains and lasting changes that I have.

Finally, having said I’m not a vain person, I ditched my 40” waist trousers and am now buying waist size 34”, and commensurately slimmer shirts. Nothing wrong with a bit of vanity !!

I was widowed in April 2019, during my husband’s 9 year battle with cancer I gained 20kg, was diagnosed with high blood pressure and in January was told I was pre diabetic.

Having first met Neil a few months ago, I was very intrigued by the work that he did and found him to be a very interesting and engaging person to speak with.  I knew it was only a matter of time before I would invite him in to speak about the good work he does in terms advising people about how to eat and live healthily.  Neil has a particular interest and focus on preventing, or living well with Type 2 Diabetes and is clearly on a personal mission to share his wisdom with as many people as he can meet.

 

I am the owner of a Home Care company called Right at Home Medway, and one of the biggest challenges facing many of our Clients is Dementia.  There is plenty of ongoing research that suggests clear links between Type 2 Diabetes and Dementia, therefore it was clear there would be synergies between the work that Neil and I do.  Neil spoke of this and also gave clear and practical advise about what we can influence in our own lives to reduce the risk of developing such diseases, or reduce the impact they have.  Neil’s style of communication is clear, concise and he is able to present many facts and serious topics in an interesting manner.  This was of particular interest to me as our audience was very varied and included a wide age-range.  There were children of Primary and Secondary school age, middle aged adults all the way up to people in their late eighties.  All were kept interested, the message was digestible by all, and I certainly get the sense that most (if not all), took away at least one small change in their lives they would be able to make right away.

I first met Neil in the summer of 2019. It was immediately apparent that Neil is passionate about all things nutrition and in using his knowledge to help people; people of all ages and different shapes and sizes

I guess that I may not fit the picture that most people would have of a person in dire need of advice on nutrition (I am just short of 6 feet tall, never weighed more than 13 stone (82.5 kilos) and for a 51 year old man, I remain very active). However, as Neil will tell you, nutrition is not all about weight loss; far from it.

The reason I became interested and ultimately asked Neil to work with me, was that I had always, completely and rather complacently relied on ‘my metabolism’ to take care of all of the unhealthy stuff that I ate and drank. Further, it became apparent that some of the ‘healthy’ stuff I was eating was not that healthy at all. One of the principal issues that I asked Neil to help me with was my addiction to refined sugar. Five (at least) cups of tea a day, 2 teaspoons of sugar in each cup = 50g per day x 365 = A LOT OF SUGAR! With advice and guidance from Neil and a little will power from me I now have no refined sugar at all in my tea.

Aside from completely curing my sugar addiction, Neil has managed to teach me to become more mindful about nutrition. was able to provide me with relevant information and advice on foods, my diet in general and advice on natural food supplements. Furthermore, Neil’s style was that rather than ‘instruct’ you, he convinced you to make the choices and changes yourself. Neil is clearly immensely knowledgeable but not at all dictatorial in his approach but he will use the power of accountability. Moreover, if he feels at any time that you have become disengaged with the process and may have lost focus, if he cannot help you to regain that focus, he will not simply continue to ‘take your money’.  He is very professional, conscientious and ethical.

I didn’t go to Neil to lose weight but a pleasant by-product of what he has done for me is that I have lost over half a stone but more importantly, my body composition is much healthier as well as my hydration levels. I now have a metabolic age significantly below my actual age and generally feel a lot healthier too. I have also introduced a fasting day into my ‘nutritional week’ (it’s not as hard as you might think).

Over a 3 to 4 year period my weight had gradually increased and I’d grown from a size 10 to a size 14. When I met Neil, I was overweight, struggling with a number of medical conditions including arthritis in both knees, and both my body image and self-esteem were at a low ebb.

In the four months that I have been working with Neil, I can honestly say that he has changed my life!

I always thought that I ate healthily (had the odd treat or snack) and exercised regularly (3-5 days a week) but I soon realised that I had formed some bad habits.

Following my initial consultation with Neil, it became clear that although weight loss was a significant goal, my main focus was to improve my general health, be able to manage the chronic fatigue caused by a medical condition and improve my gut health. Although I felt motivated to start this journey, was prepared to make this investment in my health and work hard to achieve my goals, I was overwhelmed with the enormity of the task ahead as there was so much going on in my life and I was not sure if I had the energy! I need not have worried!!

In the accountability sessions every two weeks, Neil’s compassion, professionalism and expert knowledge enabled me to stay focussed and reassured me that I was not alone in this journey. Neil provides support, sets achievable goals between sessions, provides education on not only nutrition but lifestyle as well all without being on a faddy diet!! He advocates a healthy nutritional plan which focuses on fresh ingredients, cooking from scratch and not eating processed foods. Very quickly I found I was not only breaking bad habits but also forming new good habits and making healthy choices. I have also discovered that non-processed food is much tastier, more enjoyable and much more satisfying so I never feel hungry!

On my journey with Neil so far, I have lost 10kg (22lbs), have dropped two dress sizes and am in sight of the goals I set myself at the start. My body image/self-esteem has improved in leaps and bounds, my medical conditions are much better controlled – I even went to a hospital appointment recently and was able for the first time to announce “I feel great” instead of having a list of issues to sort out. Without that extra 10kg, I have been able to go back to my combat classes and can now walk around a museum or go shopping without being in agony!

I have learnt so much since working with Neil and have come to realise that body composition is much more important than weight which at the end of the day is just a number!! All of my body composition statistics are now coming into the healthy range and I do feel great! Visceral fat and body fat %, body size measurements and my metabolic age have all fallen dramatically, and my hydration and muscle mass have increased. In addition, my chronic fatigue has improved hugely, my skin, hair and nails look healthy, I am sleeping better and I have so much more energy. This is all testament to what Neil has to offer!

As I sit here writing this, I reflect on a number of brilliant changes Neil has helped me make.

When I started seeing him four months ago, I was a 44 year old woman who’d spent her 30s and early 40s yo-yoing in weight from around 9 stone 7lbs to 12 stone 7lbs, ever since first joining WeightWatchers aged 29.

I had got into very bad habits and fluctuated between periods of being quite active and healthy and then periods where I lost control. When I met Neil, I was overweight, struggling with a number of medical conditions including arthritis in both knees, and both my body image and self-esteem were at a low ebb.

I always thought that I ate healthily (had the odd treat or snack) and exercised regularly (3-5 days a week) but I soon realised that I had formed some bad habits.

What impressed me was the fact that Neil stressed long term weight management NOT a quick fix that comes back equally quickly.

We started with a discovery session that highlighted a few problems with my diet.  A two week eating diary confirmed the first impression –much too much chocolate and too little water.

Neil made a house visit which involved a lot of weight and tape measurements.  Together with a blood pressure test, these confirmed that I was over stressed, over weight and was eating all the wrong things.  A plan was set in motion.

Two months in to that plan, having been visited by Neil every two weeks and prodded into changing some of my bad habits, I am beginning to feel the benefits; My daily intake of calories has remained roughly the same but I have 20 points lower blood pressure, I am 5kg lighter and my percentage of body fat is falling whilst my percentage of body water is slowly rising.

There is, however, a down side to all this.  I’m three notches less on the belt which means that I am buying lots of new clothes!  Why? Neil is very encouraging. He listens and helps you to your individual goals, interests of reaching these goals and way of making changes. He is firm but realistic coach.

Since my first consultation with Neil my whole outlook on food and attitude towards my thinking has changed and I feel I am heading in the right direction. I have not only lost weight, inches and fat, I have become more aware about what I eat and how to improve my fitness. I think differently to what I am eating and even my emotional levels have improve.

I love sport and health, it has always interested me but I have never seem confident enough to really get into it, especially as I wasn’t a very good role model. I have coped better in my job in which I was close to leaving at the time I first met Neil.

I feel healthier, more energised, and lighter and a whole lot more positive about sticking to long term changes for the better. I’m not just watching numbers go down on the scales I’m feeling everything improving.

I have Ulcerative Colitis (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), which is controlled by immunosuppressant which meant I was getting colds and chest infections every month or so.  I had next to no energy.  As I have a 3 year old to look after I couldn’t go on like this, so I thought a nutritionist might be able to help (my diet consisted of high sugar foods to try and gain weight to no avail).

Since working with Neil I have changed the way I think about what I am eating, I have drastically reduced my sugar in take and changed to a healthier diet (colitis permitting) and I have only had one chest infection in 5 months.

I have so much more energy, am going to bed later which has improved my relationship with my Husband.  All this is down to the advice and guidance from Neil.  He closely monitors what I am eating and how I am feeling and relates this to my symptoms, which have now reduced as I can manage my diet and stress levels more effectively.

Neil is always there at the end of an email or the phone when I need some support.  He has given lots of useful recipes to keep my diet varied.  He is helping me to gain weight and muscle mass, which is slowly creeping up.

I don’t know where I would be today without Neil’s help and guidance.
